Here it is, hope it helps:

Call x = the larger fraction, the smaller fraction becomes = x/4, then we have the equation:
x + x/4 = 5/9, then
(4x + x) / 4 = 5/9
5x / 4 = 5/9
x = 20/45 or simplify the fraction by 5 you have x = 4/9 which is the larger fraction

So, the smaller fraction is x / 4 = (4/9) / 4 = 1/9

Final result: 4/9 + 1/9 = 5/9
