1. Writing - This invention has transcended time and geography in its importance. It is still used to day, despite its antiquity.
2. Metal Working - Equally as antiquated as writing, yet still used today. Shaped warfare (and therefore the world) for thousands of years, provided the tools required for any number of other crafts.
3. Mathematics - The discipline of mathematics has opened scientific doors throughout history. It has been a vehicle of scientific advancement since its inception.
4. Popular government - The governmental foundation of the modern world.
5. Capitalism - It was Capitalism that provided the motivation for most of the inventions we enjoy today, INCLUDING those of the Industrial Revolution.
Maybe I'm going too deep with this, but I think it is a pretty accurate assessment.
