I don't know French, but baroque is a style of music that was popular before classical. Now most people would hear it, and assume it was classical, though there are differences. I don't know if that's really helpful, or if that's even what baroque means in French.

Baroque is both a period and a style of art/music.
Look it up on wikipedia, it paints a pretty good picture of the definition.

Baroque?
This is what the American Heritage Dictionary says:
"ba·roque (b…-r½k“) adj.
1. also Baroque. Of, relating to, or characteristic of a style in art and architecture developed in Europe from about 1550 to 1700, emphasizing dramatic, often strained effect and typified by bold, curving forms, elaborate ornamentation, and overall balance of disparate parts.
2. Also Baroque. Music. Of, relating to, or characteristic of a style of composition that flourished in Europe from about 1600 to 1750, marked by chromaticism, strict forms, and elaborate ornamentation.
Also Baroque n. The baroque style or period in art, architecture, or music. --ba·roque“ly adv."
Some churches in Europe are baroque. They have rich ornamentation in the inner, with a ceiling often projecting the heavens and angels flying in and out, much white and gold, uplifting, delightful, the expression of an overjoyed life. The lines are predominently curved.
