I don't think you can be nice if you are not honest, they go hand in hand. So I say honest.

Are we talking BRUTAL HONESTY to an affliction? Or basic no white lie honesty? or tactful honesty?

Being this is the real world we have to lie on almost a daily basis. Sales man calls, police officer traffic stop, grocery store return policies, teacher conference, the list goes on. We humans for the most part negotiate some kind of value in someway, shape or form.

Better to be honest nicely. Best of both worlds.

Honest. I'd rather if someone told me a hard truth than give me a phony nice comment. I want someone to say your breath stinks or your hair looks like crap than some "nice" person saying wow you look great then talking about me behind my back.

I do not believe it is an either-or situation. Humans are so because they can speak. In our humanity we ought work at wording our honesty so as not to interfer with communication. Why be so direct that truth most often causes pain and anger. Live a life of love, speaking the truth with love. This is possible, and always worth the effort. In failing to make the effort, we are likely simply lazy, and possibly are being cruel.

It is always worth the effort to be kind, as well as truthful. After all how can we be so certain we are, in fact, the barer of truth. We are flawed also. So it might be wise to not put ourselves in the position of being "Lady Truth and Justice". Then we are less likely to cause injury, and also less likely to find ourselves in a prideful error.
