I work part-time for a small business, I started my employment june 06. Since June I have taken no paid holidays. I asked my employer how many days I was entitled to and came up with 8 days a year starting from Jan 07 - Dec07. I work 15 hours a week spread over 3 days, surely this is not right? Does anyone have any experience in this area or ideas where I could find this information out?

He is right, and I'll explain why:

On Full time, You are entitled to 20 days pa Holiday on 40 hpw, so you earn 1.6 Holidays per month worked.

You only work 15 hpw, which is 37.5% of the Full time week, so you earn 37.5% of the 1.6 Holiday days per month worked; so you earn 0.6 holiday days per month worked.

In the past year, you have worked 12 months (2006), plus January as well; 13 months at 0.6 is 7.8 days so after Feb, you will have 8.4, rounded to 8.

Your boss is bending the rules a little as it is not normal practice to let you carry over your holiday entitlement from year to year. He is letting you carry over the 2006 Holiday entitlement to this year.

In my last job I worked 18 hours a week (spread over 5 days), and the full time staff worked 37 hours a week. It worked out that I was entitled to half the holidays that a full time employer who had been there the same length of time. I was allowed 14.5 days, plus the 8 Bank Holidays.

Find out what the full time staff get and half it. That way you will get an idea of what you are entitled to.

You are also entitled to 4 Bank Holidays (or time off in lieu).

That sounds about right.

And you should count yourself lucky - part time workers RARELY get any paid holidays.

And even full time workers usually have to work for six months before they start getting any benefits.

Celebrate!! You have a generous employer who offers benefits to someone working only 15 hours a week.

I think you are entitled to 0.5 days per 37.5 hours but that is full time
On this basis you would be entitled to 10.5 days
