Well, a Buddhist would tell you that it is *dying*, that is the most frightening. It is the fear of losing or letting go of the things that the ego has formed attachments to during life, e.g: friends and family, sensations, experiences, money, a career, a sense of place, etc. It is the fear of of losing what we believe to be our identity. (There is also the fear of the unknown, but I think that is less of an issue, because in a certain sense, we deal with uncertainty and the unknown every day.)
In the end, This is always the real danger; that of allowing our supposed identity to be defined by things that are in some ways *external* to us. Things that are dependent on time or place, or on faith. The fear is, that if we lose these things, parts of our "self" will become meaningless, or nonexistent.
But is it really possible for a person's Identity to be truly self-contained? Is there really an essential part of us that is independent of thought, memory, or experience? When we die, is our dead body all that is left? I don't know if there is a rational answer to such questions, not one that does not involve some kind of circular or faith-based argument like: "I think therefore I am". Or at least not one that we can successfully argue while we are still living *within* ourselves.
Is this enough Philosophical double-talk for you?

Answer is yes… most of them are but once you understand that death will happen it becomes a friend to life allowing you to experience life knowing you can only take memories with you in death

I believe it is dying. People are afraid of pain, the death would be the end of pain, but the dying is a kind of process that could take a while.

For me it is definitely dying. The fear of becoming seriously ill and slowly dying and for your family to suffer as much as you is the worst.
Death has no fear for me, I believe we live after death and I'm not afraid at all, I look at it as going home.
My mum once said "Once I've taken that old overcoat of a body off, do what you like with it, cause I will be wearing a new one" My sentiments exactly. I am a spiritual person, not religious so I don't want prayers, flowers or praise, just remember me that's all.

The fear of death is frightful to most of us. It is the fear of losing our possessions our loved ones etc. It is the fear of the unknown and possible judgment. Even the most devout atheist has that little fear in there. That is human behavior or the human condition.
Animals accept this finality but still struggle in the end. I do not think that animals think or intellectualize their situation like humans.
It is just natural, instinct.
It always amazes me that pathological killers also fear death. You would think they would just want to get over it. I do not understand why they keep prolonging execution. They are just prolonging the inevitable. Torturing themselves.
When you think about it we are all dying one day at a time. No escaping it.
The spiritual aspect is the only answer or relief from this fear.

What scares people most is the unknown. If we knew what life would be like after death it would be easier to deal with as we pass; but also death is most of the time painful and nobody enjoys pain.
Good luck

Dying. Dee is right on this one. They did a study on death row inmates and they found out that the inmate's behavior changed toward the approaching hour of the execution. The could see the fear in these fearless killers.

It depends on the person.
you can look at it from both angles.
People are afraid of dying because they're going to miss living and their family is going to miss them.
But some people are afraid of death cause it seems painful.
there are so many ways to die and most of us have no clue
what it's going to be like when it's finally over. :[
