I am all for free tools. Here are some good ones.
Use multiple layers of protection. Use these in any combination.
Anti-Virus: AOL's Active Virus Shield, Grisoft AVG or Alwil Avast.
Anti-Spyware: Spybot - Search and Destroy, AVG Anti-Spyware, Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal.
Firewall: Windows Firewall, Comodo, ZoneAllarm (?) Pro.

Don't rely on just one programme I use Comodo.com for a Firewall, make sure you switch off the Microsoft firewall though can't have two running.
Also use Spybot.com for detecting spyware, and Lavasoft .com for adaware detection. ALL Free downloads.
One will usually find something which has slipped by the other two.

I'd go with teeballer, with an alternative anti-virus of Avast, free too.
Add Ad-aware SE Personal and Spybot S&D, both free too, to deal with adware, spyware etc

If you use microsoft, try the microsoft products they know their system very well.
If you are comfortable with McAfee, then use it, industry says they are the best out there.
But don't forget to combine your security with the free applications that can help do the job. Good luck.

The best antivirus program is NOD32, i have had avg, bitdefender, mcfee, norton and they where all useless at discovering backdoor trojans. If you are used to torrents you camn get it for free.
My biggest tip, is scan everything you download before opening or running it. Once it has been opened it is hard to find viruses.
