Ok well I ma pregnant for the second time and very very cranky. One of my irks right now is pre-natal vitamins. I know going in how horrible they make me feel during the first trimester and how half the time I yack them up. I know they are supposed be too be good for the baby so do not judge me or say I dont care but I have had a problem bringing myself to take them everyday. Last week I took them a few times. This week I haven't even started and I have been feeling so sick for 4 days now. I keep staring at the bottle and dreading it. I have known I am pregnant for about a month now
Did anyone have problems getting into a routine with pre-natals?? I feel like a bad person but at the same time they make me feel crappy. And yes I have done the "take them with meals", "take them at night". As I said second time around. Did anyone use alternative methods, a different vitamin, skip it all together??
And yes I know about the folic acid thing too......

I have been sick with MORNING SICKNESS FOR 4 DAYS really bad. Wow who knew you could get that while pregnant for the person making a comment about it. When I take the vitamin during this time all I do is throw it back up

I had no problem with my first, but terrible problems with my second. They just didn't agree with my stomach. I ended up switching to a kids' gummy vite, which has 100% RDA. The only substantial difference between a standard one-a-day and prenatals is folic acid. My doctor recommended I take 800 mcg folic daily, which I took in a small tab that dissolves under your tongue. My ob/gyn had me choose whatever brand I preferred, and the one I found worked gentlest on my stomach was KAL, which I found at the regular drugstore.
If you do take a regular multi (as opposed to something specifically made for pregnancy) make sure it doesn't have too much vitamin A. That can cause severe birth defects. The maximum amount it should have is 4000 IU for your right now (I've seen multis with 10,000 IU.)

I know how you feel. I have severe morning sickness and the prenatal vitamins make it soooo much worse. It doesn't matter when I take them I still get sick. I dread them and even looking at the bottle makes me want to puke. I was so dehydrated that I was put on medicine, that's the only way I have been able to keep them down. I take them at dinner when I have a "heavy meal". My stomach has to be really full, which is hard when you are sick. The only way I have been able to keep them down is by my medication. I'm sorry you are going through this. I know you can switch and try another brand, or take two flint stone vitamins. You might be like me and try brands and non of them change. Good luck. If you are really sick make sure you don't wait too long to get to an e.r. I could've lost my baby, because I thought it was normal m/s. I didn't know. Good luck!!

I took them at night, right before bed, when I was feeling my best. I could not stomach them otherwise.
Also, I only took the folic acid, it's the most important one anyway and the combination vitamins made me way more sick than just the folic acid.
I missed some too with morning sickness that's why they tell all women of child bearing age to take it daily BEFORE they get pregnant.

My doc told me it is not uncommon for pre-natal vitamins to make women sick in the first trimester and its ok if you can't take them. Just to start up again when you can keep them down (hopefully around 12 weeks. Just keep eating a variety of fruits and veggies, you'll be ok. If you can, take regular vitamins, folate pills or go to an alternative food store they might have suggestions there. Otherwise, you're not abusing your baby. What do you think is worse? Not taking vitamins or taking them and throwing them and everything else up? Either way, no extra vitamins in your system.

Take them at bedtime, that's what I do.
If you really think that's whats making you sick, then why have you been sick for the past four days without taking them?
Suck it up and take them. If you don't, then make sure you are eating SUPER healthy. Lots of oranges and OJ, and romaine lettuce and all other foods high in folic acid. The first trimester is the most critical for the folic acid. Believe me, you'd wish you had taken them if your baby ends up with some problem like spina bifida.

I never took them. I always just made sure I ate very healthy foods and I had 2 very healthy babies. There are some very good childrens chewables available in health food stores that are just as good as pre-natals. Make sure you drink plenty of OJ for folic acid.
