It kind of depends on what you are looking for. The entire state of CA is great, both Northern and Southern. There is always some sort of battle between people in NorCal and SoCal and which part is better, but I have lived in both and they are both pretty much the same overall, both have good things and bad things about them. The only place of CA i would avoid in the Central Valley, unless small rural towns is your thing.

It's hard for me to choose between SF and San Diego, I was born and raised in the Bay Area and have lived in San Diego the past 6 years. But right now I am going to go with San Diego. Best weather in the nation, never too hot or too cold and it doesn't rain that much. SF is pretty cold overall and rainy in winter, lots of fog and wind too. SD has amazing beaches and from May to about early October the water is warm enough (low 70's) to swim in w/o a wetsuit, that's one thing I don't like about NorCal, you can never swim in the water there b/c it's always too cold. And you can't drink on the beach up there like you can in San Diego, so the beaches up there get pretty boring pretty quickly. There is also a great vibe down here, the people are really chill and laid back. It's more of a party town than LA or SF. It's more casual too, most people are in board shorts and flip flops, even the 35yo business types dress like that. Most people are transplants here so people are friendly and down to just kick it. It's also less congested and crowded than SF, less traffic, and it's cheaper to live in San Diego b/c housing is lower. I think it's the best deal in CA, you get to live close to the beach for less than living in SF or LA. It's also close to other destinations like Mexico, LA, Orange County, Santa Barbara, and Las Vegas! There is always something to do and going on b/c the weather is so great year round, especially during summer.

SF is a great city too. Lots of history, very dense and urban. It's very cosmopolitan and sophisticated. Great buildings, architecture, and amazing natural and man-made scenery. There isn't another city like it west of the Mississppi. Great public transportation too. If you're older and make good $$ SF is a good place to live, but it is kind of pretentious b/c of all the money and pseudo-intellectuals there. But people in the Bay Area overall are pretty cool and chill. The northern CA coast is also really scenic with all the Redwood forests and nature there, something Southern CA doesnt really have.

CA is such a great state overall and has so many cool places it's hard to choose, I miss the Bay Area a lot sometimes, but I also love it here in San Diego. So pretty much anywhere you choose to live you will probably like it.

San Francisco and the Bay Area by far. But like other people are saying, be prepared to spend a lot of money. I would say that in order to live in this area and be comfortable you should make at least $56,000 a year. That's the only draw back. You would probably have to live with roomates too since a whole house is around $2500-$3000 a month to rent.

San Francisco has some of the best restaurants I've ever been to and there's always something to do. Your also near mountains and the Pacific Ocean so despite that you may be living in a city you just have to drive over the golden gate to take in some scenery. There are ferrys you can take across the bay in 15 minutes and it seems like your in the Mediterranean. It's definately one of the classiest and most beautiful cities I've been to in the US.

Orange County (if you like the swanky lifestyle)

Well Sacremento is great!! They have the best malls. Areas of Vallejo and Oakland are ghetto. Berkely is a cool area. Benicia is old school. Fairfield and Vacaville are weak!!! I love visiting LA. and San Francisco is beautiful!!

San Diego is my favorite in California. The weather is wonderful, people friendly, lots of jobs, educational opportunities, and tons of cool things to do.
