well hundreds were accused and only 20 were put to death so there were many many survivors.

the 'grave images' yahoo group at one point published a timeline of the salem witch trials, which included a lot of little known facts with regards to the changing of the pastor at the church and the fact that the accusations that led to the trials started shortly there after and also got into the financial aspect of the witch trials - apparantly when someone was accused they lost all of their stuff if they confessed. all of that money went to either the magistrates or the prosecutor or both.

i'd go to that group and join it and read up on this - the info should be captured in their messages, though you'll have to look at it.

they did a really nice job with this, were impartial and did it almost like the harper's index - only about the salem witch trials - i highly recommend it as a unique resource - and the owners of grave images are very open and accessible for further research - they can be reached through their web site - www.graveimages.com. they are an apparel company, but have a strong devotion to early new england culture - i'm sure they would help you - i also recommend them.

they would also be able to give you details of what exactly happened when witches were interrogated, that i'm a little too weak stomached to get into in detail - needless to say it was imaginative torture.

there is also a new hypothesis about the whole witch hysteria that i saw on pbs's 'secrets of the dead.' they think that a particular kind of grain called ergot may have rotted before harvest and led to sporadic contamination of bread made from the grain. the suggestion was that ergot poisoning would induce something akin to an lsd (hallucinagenic) experience that folks in that time period were ill-equipped to deal with.

The Salem Witch Trails occured in Salem city, Massachusetts, however the truthfully "witching" handed off in Salem Village. greater beneficial than a hundred human beings have been accused of Withcraft and 20 have been killed via fact of it. maximum have been women human beings, yet a minimum of two adult men have been killed. it is not any longer customary despite if there grew to become into actual witchcraft, or if the ladies accusing those human beings have been faking it for some reason. And in case you opt for greater innovations, flow to Wikipedia or Google. Or the library.
