I cant believe for a second that you would find it difficult to find an excuse?
Why you would want to is beyond me, 'it's pathetic', hardly covers it.
Do you perhaps think you know everything about all the exhibits in the Manchester museums? That must be a great feeling , I wish I could have a full knowledge of any given subject.
Wouldn't it be great to pick up any exhibit from any of the museums and be able to give an interesting and comprehensive lecture on that particular item?
Perhaps you are more interested in how to calculate the area of an uneven oval?
You don't even mention what you would prefer to be doing on that particular day, do you really need an excuse, this implies you think you are in the wrong?
Would it be completely out of the question to go direct to who ever organisd this trip and just say outright "I think this trip is childish and I cant see any benifit in my taking part" Whats the problem with doing just that?

Ya think? I know that when I was in grade school I had a completely different appreciation for art (I really should say a lack of appreciation). I was assigned a project in my Modern Art History class where I had to go to a local museum. I dreaded going but when I did, I had such a wonderful time - because now I knew about Monet, Van Gough, Picasso and all the others. University is about learning how to think critically - it can't be done with a closed mind.

"pathetic" is hardly a good excuse... Dont have a good excuse?
Then, perhaps you should think about attending. If you havent been SINCE primary school, perhaps the displays have changed. And, since you are older, you might find that you appreciate it more now. Although, somehow I doubt that, due to your initial statement....

What I'd give to be able to go on your class trip! Anyway, just say you have the flu if you really don't want to go.

i never knew university makes you go to class trips
if its graded, i suggest you go
if you have to drive there your self, i suggest saying"i got lost on the way there"
say you had a family member sick and you had to console him or her the whole day
peace
