I have a prepay plan on a non-prepay phone by just switching the SIM card. Like it's been stated, it does work with Cingular (what I have) and apparently Tmobile. I liked my contract phone so much, but I went ahead and bought a cheap phone that I didn't really like when I went to prepay. I was so glad to later find out I could still use my old phone by switching the card--it had my downloaded ringtones and graphics on it. Before I knew of Yahoo Answers, I just looked up a lot of sites online until I found the info, then I tried it.

You didn't mention which service provider you want to use or are using. BUT if you use (GSM) Cingular or Tmobile, all you need to do is buy a Tmobile or Cingular phone and puy a prepaid card and sim card in the amount you desire. Tmobile & Cingular use sim cards so you can switch phones as often as you like by taking out the sim card.

You need to first make sure that you can insert a sim card behind the battery. If so then go to a dealer and tell them you want a sim card and would also like to set up a prepaid account. I would go with cingular. They get better service.

as long as the phone you want to use is unlocked, meaning that the phone is not locked to a specific service provider, then it can be used on any network. as for the second part of your question, the only prepaid service that doesn't use a sim card is cricket. there could be other providers that don't use a sim, but cricket is the only one i am personally aware of.

you can use any plan on any phone. Some companies will only sell you certain phones on their prepay, because they are jerks. But as far as technology goes, and phone on any plan with the company you are with.
