We tried to take out a care agreement with a well know utilities provider and were told that the Powermax 155x boiler system we had wasn't coverable due to the fact that it needed stripping down and nearly £400 worth of work doing on it. The engineer also told us that this work would need to be done every 2 years. Now this boiler is no more than 6 years old and I don't see how a boiler this new needs such work doing on it? Is it just a ploy to get more money from us or do these boilers need this much attention? The way I see it is that I would rather buy a new boiler than have work doing to one every couple of years??!! Can any central heating experts advise me!!???? THANKS

Thanks for the replies.

I think that a second opinion will be obtained as I have always been with British Gas for my boiler cover and this was British Gas who gave me this advice and quoted me this price. I am just querying how a less than 6 year old boiler needs stripping down and £400 worth of work needing doing on it and then the same needing doing again in 2 years time according to the engineer. My previous boiler was 25 years old and I needed nothing doing to it over the last 4 years!! They don't make 'em like they used to eh?!

Sounds sketchy to me. Get a second opinion.

The boiler is only 6 years old - it shouldn't need a lot of work unless you have harsh water. You should be looking at ~10 years for major maintenance and/or replacement, depending on the model.

The engineer is playing it safe. He WANTS it to be cleaned every 2 years to keep it at absolute peak performance. Thing is, the boiler will be fine working at less than peak, and you won't loose a lot of money from lost efficiency.

I know they don't make them like they used to. My old man had an oil fired boiler. Must have been 40 years old. The firebox (brickwork) was redone once. We used to drain the rusty water out each year, and of course bleed the radiators.

Other people I know have gas boilers. None have required this type of work. An automatic flue damper, ignitor, controller - mostly electric stuff was replaced over time.

I am thinking like you - either they are trying to dupe you into paying their kids college tuition, or you have a bum boiler model. I'd get a second opinion first before replacing your boiler. It would be worth the 75 to 100 pounds.

Your appliance is GAS and you can DIE if it is not properly serviced - Does it sound expensive now..........

The service co is covering themselves as appliance has not been serviced in some time - there are cheaper agreements on the market - try some of the larger outfits like Britsh Gas EDF etc first as they work a mass market and can do quite good deals - GET A GAS DETECTOR TODAY.
