In answer to your wrongly asked question, all of the blocks are painted on every side !

OK, think about a cube of cubes- I will assume the big cube is made up of 3 blocks on each side [your problem doesn't state this]. Then paint just the outside (the dimensions don't matter). This is what I think your question is asking.

The only [small block] cubes that are in three different planes, in other words X, Y and Z, are on the corners. So there are 6 of these with 3 painted sides.

The blocks that have two sides painted would be in two planes, X and Y, Y and Z, or X and Z. So there are 14 of these.

blocks that have one side painted are in only one plane, X, Y or Z - so there are 6 of these also (one for each side of the cube - the very center of each side).

This leaves us with only one cube left that is not painted at all, the very center of the cube.

6 + 14 + 6 + 1 = 27 = 3 cubed.

If you really meant in the problem that the big cube has SIX blocks on each side, it's still easy to figure out, assuming again that only the outside is painted.
There are still only 6 blocks that are in all 3 planes - the six corners of the big cube.
But now the "inside" of the cube is a cube 5 X 5 X 5 or 125 blocks in volume - none of these would be painted.
Blocks with one side painted would number 25*6 or 150, since each side would have a 5 X 5 surface of one-side-painted blocks.
6*6*6 or 216 - 150 - 125 - 6 = 35 with two sides painted.

It appears part of the problem is missing. If the blocks were painted before the cube was made or if the cube was made and then it was painted.
The later is 1 side is painted, if the entire block was painted painted prior to making the cube, then 6 sides were painted? Since there is no 6 in the answer then it must be C) 1 side. of a block or the entire cube......I'm confusing myself!
Good Luck on it!

the 8 corners have 3 sides
the 48 edges have 2 sides
the 96 faces have 1 side
and there's a 4x4x4 cube (64) with no sides showing in the middle
216 in total for a 6x6x6 cube - I think that's what you were on about

3 sides - 8
2 sides - 48
1 side - 96
0 sides - 4x4x4 = 64
this is the answer of a cube 6x6x6
six blocks wide
six blocks in height
six blocks in length
6x6x6 = 216
8+48+96+64 = 216
