We have a 29 gallon freshwater aquarium, with tiger barbs and bala sharks. We have a Whisper Power filter that hangs on the back of the tank. We also have an air pump that connects to two tubes with airstones--it's an air pump for tanks less than 30 gallons. Whenever I turn the air pump on, the bubbles just seem way too intense. All of the air from the air pump creates so many bubbles and currents in the tank, that it seems like the fish are having a hard time swimming.

Does the Whisper Power filter provide enough oxygen? Or do I need to keep the air pump on sometimes? (I usually plug the air pump in once a day for a couple hours. Is this causing too much stress for the fish?) Thanks!

The bubbles are just to add some spice to the tank, get rid of it or you can actually buy a air flow valve that will allow you to adjust the amount of air going to the air stones, or another option is to get some mobile decorations that move. Connect them to the line and when enough air is in there if its a chest or something the chest will open. If not just get rid of it, the fish dont need that the water filter creates enough flow. You could also buy a smaller pump maybe the one you got is just to strong check your pump size and for what tank size its for.

this is just my opinion because I have had several fresh and salt water aquariums. The filter will pull some oxygen if the water falls and inch or so from the filter to the water. Just water movement and current will not get much oxygen into the water. You might try getting a small plastic valve to put in the air line so you can cut back on the volume of bubbles. More rocks on top of the stone makes smaller bubbles. I have had many fish that like to sit right in the bubbles. If the filter is makes bubbles in the water that should be enough. But you do need the filter no matter what.

The filter will provide enough agitation to allow oxygen to enter the water. It really doesn't take much. I would get rid of the bubbler all together, they're kind of tacky. If you do decide to keep it, talk to the people at a pet store and either buy a less powerful pump or there are tricks you can do with the piping to allow some of the air to escape before entering the tank.

You should be just fine without the airstones. The filter will provide enough water motion to keep it aerated. Keep it handy in case you need it in an emergency, but daily use won't be needed.
