Something simple as a letter to the president is usually all that it takes.
For my sons team; we would send a letter along with a t-shirt with our teams logo on it. We would sometimes send a picture of the team or team logo stickers.
Follow through - call or visit the business in a week after you delivered the letter and ask politely if they have had a chance to review it. Keep contacting them until you get an answer "yes" or "no" don't be pushy and don't act like a salesman.
Offer incentives - If your team has a website offer to place their company's logo on your website (marketing). Also a team plaque to place in their lobby. There may be tax write-offs if your team is part of a non-profit organization.
A few years back we got Gatorade to sponsor my sons soccer team, they gave us a banner to display at games and all the Gatorade we could drink! They even gave us the green squeezable's!
Good Luck and don't get discouraged!

Put together a Folder with Pictures,Accolades and Trophies Won.
Along with Potential Competitions and Press Opportunities that are Forth Coming!(That would benefit any Sponsor!)
Then either put it onto Disc and Mail it out, or get out there on foot and go see company directors!

If the team is good and everyone is paying attention to the team, companies will beg to the team for sponsors.
