As far as rock goes, it was Ginger Baker in Cream. However, he did not invent the double bass, that credit goes to the jazz greats. The first was Ray McKinley in the 40's, followed by Louie Bellson. Ed Shaunessy of the Doc Severence band for Ed Sullivan played a double bass Ludwig in which the toms were reversed.

Also, the guy who posted after me is wrong. Ginger Baker may play DW drums NOW, but if you do your research, DW has only been around since the 70's. Baker played Ludwigs during his double bass Cream years.

The first Rock Drummer to use X2 Bass Drums was Ginger Baker of Cream he used 22x18 DW bass Drums! The First Metal Drummer to use X2 Bass drums was Dave Holland of Judas Priest He used 22X18 Tama Bass Drums

I think Ginger Baker of Cream was one of the first people to do that...not so sure if he was THE first.
