Old books give-away at a nominal price at libraries or at airports so that they could reach the world or a non-profit distribution center that would show a true environmental consciousness spirit. Individuals and corporations effort are needed in this worthwhile cause, in the face of diminishing library facilities use.

The reason for the question is that a loacl library made the news in Quebec, Canada that they were going to dump old about 50, 000 + books because (that had been out of use for quite sometime) of declining interest in reading books due to the internet usage.

With time, books will become garbage, anyway. Paper gathers dust and eventually yellows. That's why the alternative is digitalizing everything and putting it up on the net, as a PDF maybe.

I agree with you 100%. i know of a law library that disposed of dozens, if not hundreds, of West Reporters b/c they figured that since they had the CD and the online service, they didn't need the books; plus, they viewed the books as hogging up much needed space. gee, they could have at least donated them to the correctional facility! this is a big problem. i think because libraries are not-for-profit entities compounded by limited staff as well as out-of-touch, inept, and screwed up administrators/managers, they are not addressing this very important issue. all i can suggest is that you contact the American Library Association (URL below) and let your opinion be known. Thank you for caring and taking the time to post.

Yes.Definitely.
Each and every country must form street libraries and also distribute books free to their people. This will improve the reading habits among the people.
Old books can be distributed instead of being dumped into the sea.

I work in a public library. the books we throw away aren't worth keeping. if we don't want a book in good condition, we sell it for a dime. remember, public libraries are nonprofit institutions and can't afford to send books very far. If a corporation would fund sending books to rural areas that don't have libraries, I think everyone would help. but excuse me? "diminishing library facilities use"??? we get up to 500 people here a day. and we're a small library.

Concentrate on teaching people to read, and they will find the books.

This is a highly political issue. Despots do not want an educated populace. Education is the strongest weapon of democracy.
