The reason I ask, is that I was exchanging emails with a mate and after a while, they became a bit more explicit - mainly about what he would like to do with a girl who works for my company. Then he phoned me and said we had better stop because his company scans email traffic for specific words, phrases and attached executables.
I can't surf for porn at work - every time you hit a site that 'may contain adult or pornograhic content' you can't get in.

I think he was more worried about me forwarding the emails around the City.
Also, how many companies actually bother to do this??

Yes. The US government also scans e-mails going across public networks to search for "terrorist" communications.
Also, if you think you've deleted something, think again. They can probably get that back, too.

I run the email system at my place of work and I can confirm this is possible. However, it's generally not something the IT dept cares about unless we are asked by a manager who has reason to suspect something dodgy is going on. Basically, we don't use these abilities to get people in trouble, we use them to entertain ourselves by reading all the sordid little emails being sent between supposedly responsible married men and the dirty little secretarys they've been giving a knee trembler to against the filing cabinet.

Absolutely. The content of all emails to and from current and former employees is owned by the company. The employees were using company computers, software, and Internet access.

Yes, it is a basic capability that even free mail scanning products allow. Microsoft Exchange on its own (no extra software) can do this.

In the UK, companies can only spy on employees' communications if they have good reason to suspect them of something specific.
Technically however, yes they can do it.
