Formally known as "The Blue Screen Of Death," this is probably the absolute worst thing to happen to your computer. What oyu need to do is start up your computer, copy down the 8-10 digit code that appears on-screen. Next, start your computer in safe mode WITH NETWORKING (important), and go to Google.com. Type in the 8-10 digit code in the search box and have solutions come to you.

It sound like it could be either a bad driver, which is why it might work in Safe Mode, or

It could be a bad startup program.

In Safe Mode go to a command prompt and type MSCONFIG. Disable all of your startup programs and reboot. If this works, you can go into safe mode and re-enable them one at a time until it hangs again. Then you will know which one is bad and you can either remove it or re-install it.

If it doesn't work, then go into Safe Mode and a command prompt and type :

SFC /SCANNOW.

That might fix it. Failing that, run CHKDSK in Safe Mode.

Good Luck/

if you would like to avoid a lot of tedious checking, then since you can access safe mode I would transfer all of your files you would like to keep, Pictures, music, internet favorites/bookmarks, etc. move them to another hard drive and format and reinstall your OS. its the most secure and reliable way to correct any problem that would cause this such as missing system files, virus, corrupt, boot record, or registry issue.

Good luck

You might have a virus. Get the files from your pc by asking an expert to do so, then reinstall your OS.
