I don't think you have to be REALLY good, just be good enough to show your average student how it's done and what not to do.
Also have to have a basic knowledge of the history of art and techniques.

I'm not sure what you mean by "really good at art," but if you mean that you can paint/draw well, etc., then the answer is no. To be a good art teacher, you need two things. First, you need to be knowledgeable in your subject matter, regardless of grade level. You need to know your art history, techniques, theory and aesthetics in a variety of mediums. Second, you need to be a good teacher. You could be a gifted artist and be a terrible teacher. Why? The answer is because teaching is an art in itself, it's known as pedagogy. It is why you have to go through a teacher preparation program, or study education. The good news is that you can learn to be a good teacher through serious study and practice. "Those who can't, teach," is a stereotype. I think this stereotype stems from bad teaching and is perpetuated by it, i.e. someone talking at blank faces and putting brains to sleep. Good teaching is tough and you have to be dedicated and passionate if you want to help others learn.

to all of you that said "those who can't teach...." please think back across your days at school and remember one inspirational teacher who - for the love of passing on knowledge - taught. I was lucky and had a few across the years, many of them were of artists (at school and later at art college) who taught as well as practiced as artists. I think you would be a sorry kind of art teacher if you weren't an artist aswell, someone who wanted to create in their own time not just 9 to 5, that doesn't mean you have to be able to draw like leonardo but you have to have a well of creativity, a real deep skill in a particular area and understanding of a broad spectrum of techniques and a positive nurturing outlook to be any real use to anyone. And frankly that is why most teachers don't measure up - it is quite a lot to ask for!

i dont suppose you have to be an artist as long as you know enough to teach other people about art. does that make sense to you?
