Bunker Hill occurred in 1775, after the American Revolution had begun with Americans and British firing on each other at Lexington and Concord.

After the war started Colonists seized Bunker's and Breed's Hill across the river close to Boston. The British, still in control, determined they could not let the Americans hold such a strategic position that allowed them to fire on the Redcoats in Boston. The British then attacked, and took staggering loses. The English did take the hill eventually when the Colonists ran out of ammunition. However, the British losses were so great and the Americans so small, that it is really not considered a victory for the Redcoats. Clearly, the raw American troops inflicting such damage on the trained British Army was a moral victory for the Colonists.

As a point of trivia, the most of the fighting was on Breed's Hill, but the battle got named Bunker Hill anyway.

Bunker Hill was the battle afetr Lexington and Concord. The Colonists held the hill, and dug defenses. The brittish assaulted the hill twice and were repulsd, but hte third time, because of almost no ammunition, the colonists had to abandon the position. Although tactically, th brittish won, the brittish took almost twice as many losses as the colonists.
