Helmets are Orange.

They aren't named after the color, Brown, either.

They are named for their first coach Paul Brown, who had objected to the original name, Panthers, chosen by fan vote because a semi-pro team had the name. The 2nd fan contest chose Browns. However, the coach was uncomfortable with the idea of having the team named after him, but stated publicly that the new team was named after boxing champion Joe Louis, who was known as the "Brown Bomber".

I have wondered that for a long time myself. They have the ugliest uniforms after the Faiders. At least the Bengals give the orange some action. Way back when I thought they were named after little elves. I don't think they have changed their look since they stopped wearing leather helmets.
As far as the color, it would make sense that Mr Brown chose orange for Bowling Green. But then again, I read he didn't want the team named the Panthers because of another local sports team with the same name.

I once heard that Paul Brown once visited Bowling Green University not too far from Cleveland and copied his football team's colors after them.
