It depends. Are you writing a real horror story, or do you want your vampires to be Brad Pitt wannabes with a sun allergy?
Folklore is full of hundreds of different types of vampires. You have to determine what KIND of story you want to write, then research the different types of vampires. I can recommend some good books for research:
The Complete Vampire Companion
The Vampire Book
Dracula (noone should call themselves a fan of vampire lit without having read this book!)
Vampires Among Us (discusses "real" vampires and the vampire lifestyle)
Also, go rent the original black and white silent film, Nosferatu. It is truely one of the greatest vampire movies of all time.
If that all can't inspire you, you have no business writing vampire fiction!

I don't know about an "ideal" vampire but you might try taking an approach that's a bit different from the usual; look at the vampire as what it is, a predator, and emphasize this over the whole "good" - "evil" - "undead" thing. True predators like wolves, cat's, ferrets, etc. have nothing to do with good or evil. If you're going to apply human concepts to such a being I would think that they would qualify as amoral rather than immoral. Other than procreating predators exist to hunt and feed, for such a being to hunger is to take whatever steps necessary to satisfy that hunger, abstract concepts like right and wrong have no relevance.Though the vampire is sentient, can be intelligent & clever & charming & attractive, though it can possess many attributes that it's victims would find alluring, at it's core it is a hunter and a feeding machine. As for as the vampire being supernatural or undead, either one of these concepts could still work here but could also be seen as superstitions that have inevitably grown up around something that humans fear.Almost every predatory animal that humans have ever feared has had legends of supernatural powers grow up around it. The vampire could still be a supernatural being this way but could also be something just as horrible to us; an ultimate predator that wears our form , a seperate evolutionary branch of humanity that preys upon humanity.
I don't know if you will find these speculations helpful but I've always thought that this aspect of the vampire has been buried under all the "good and evil' stuff attached to it. The lion neither hates nor loves it's prey, it merely feeds.
Also, if I can make this suggestion, stay away from the warm, fuzzy, tragic-romantic vampire, it's a valid & interesting concept but is currently being done to death. Just a personal opinion.
Also, if I may add a couple of things to "bardsandsages" excellent response above, regarding female vampires I would also recommend reading Sheridan LeFanu's "Carmilla", along with Dracula one of the all-time classics of the genre. Another fascinating book on the subject is "The Science Of Vampires" by Katherine Ramsland, a forensic psychologist who explores very real scientific possibilities that could underpin the concept of vampires. A truly interesting read.
Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to ramble about a subject I've found fascinating since young childhood and best of luck on your writing.

I love vampires. The best creatures ever. Well next to dragons. When I picture a vampire I picture someone who fits into the everyday crowd. This person is exotic in their own ways. They are very articulate and charming. Their vocabulary and use of the human language is superb. They would be wearing the finest threads. I guess the closest visual description I could give you would be Anne Rice's Vampires. Lestat and Louis seem to fit the description the best.

Alexei Sayle played a very discontented anarchist vampire in The Young Ones on a BBC series from 1982-84. The reason the vampire was upset was because he had become one of the petit bourgoise by being a count. Very funny.

I prefer the badass with a heart, ala Spike from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.
Vampires should be attractive, strong, confident, but have a flaw...they used to be human, after all...

Most vampires seem to be really good looking. How about a unconfident vampire who is shy? Make him lovable like a normal person.
