I was told to have sex every day - some hormone in the semen thins out the cervix.

Others told me to walk a lot, but I think that helps more with dilation than with effacement.

Walk. A LOT :P

If walking doesn't help, your OB or nurse or midwife may be interested in stripping the membranes. This sometimes speeds up dilation and labor. For more info, just search 'stripping membranes'.
