In addition to the railcar/porter answers, which are correct, Pullman used the concept of the assembly line in his manufacturing, which made him more efficient than his competitiors. He also founded company towns for his workers to live with their families. They were close by with their families, but they had to shop at the company store, rent their homes from the company, etc. This led to large labor riots/revolts. Not a bad idea, but mgmt took it too far and took advantage of the workers.

Socialism and the rise of the labor movement/unions was really taking hold at this time, and this system was both celebrated and denigrated. Mostly, it was attacked as anti-labor.

Some people celebrated Pullman because he employed black porters, giving them a decent, respectible, non farm labor job. On the otherhand, he was criticized because he also didn't pay them much, and they were away from their families for long periods and work extraordinary hours. He also had very strict rules about their appearance and behavoir, which would be unacceptible today.

nd721 is correct. Pullman founded a company that ran sleeping cars for railroads on long journeys. The railroad companies ran the trains, but the Pullman company owned and operated the cars. So sleeping car porters were Pullman employees.
