Hi,
I just purchased a new HP Pavilion Laptop. However, the fan turns itself on quite often and each time it does, a high pitched sound can be heard. I know that the sound is coming from the fan, but is there anyway to remove the sound? Do I have to get it fixed? Thanks.

Just wanted to say thanks for all your help. I'll bring it to Circuit City this Friday.

If it is new, I would return it. You can try tapping on it to knock loose the obstruction that is causing the fan to make noise but more than likely the fan needs to be replaced. The fan itself only costs a couple of bucks but if you are not familiar with disassembling your laptop, you are better off taking it back to the store where you bought it or shipping it back to them if you bought it from HP directly.

If it emits a constant sound, there's nothing to worry about. However, if it turns off after 10 seconds like you say, it means that Sony is sending your laptop a signal to spontaniously combust. They do this to customers who they know will keep buying their products so that they can make more money. The only way to fix this is to tear yourself away from sony products and buy an alien ware computer running windows 7.

CaAll HP. The newer processors have smart cooling installed and the hotter a processor gets the more the fan tries to cool. As said above use it on a HARD flat surface where it can get maximum air flow. I am betting HP will tell you the same. If it quits making noise you might have worse problems.

Usually when you either have a cheap fan or when a fan gets old they do make high pitched noises! Usually upgrading to a little bit more expensive fan will get rid of the noise AND last longer in the long run!

Return it!
Do check that something on your system isn't running the CPU at high %. Sometimes a program will get the CPU running at 50%+ all the time and tis will make the fans run faster especially with high end CPUs.
Ctrl+Alt+del and look at CPU usage and see if a program is using more time than it should

Did you buy it locally? If so, I'd trot it back to the shop & get them to comment/fix it. It might be something daft like a tiny bit of paper lodged in the fan, but as it will be under warranty I'd let them fiddle rather than try yourself.
Do you use the machine on a flat surface so air can get to the vents? They really don't being used on your lap, on the bed etc.

It's probably a bearing in the fan itself. If you just got this machine, get the fan replaced under warranty. Replaced, not repaired, some cheezy shops will tell you they repaired a fan when the only repair is replacing them.

Nothing is broken - that noise is the fan working to keep your system cold. To reduce the sound of the fan allow cold air to enter the system, keep the laptop on a flat surface such as a table, not a bed etc...
You could replace the fan but this will cost money and system knowledge.
