I am thinking in terms of upgradability, and price ratio of motherboard to chip.

AM2 is the best, but they do NOT suppor the older socket types, but they will be backwards compatible with upcoming AM2+ and AM3 sockets.

AM2 I think would be your best bet, as for availability it would be 939 (single & dual cores) or 940 (opterons dual core). I would def. get a motherboard with AM2 socket support at the very least so then your ready and all AM2 mobo's support the older socket types anyways!
