Ok- I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and assume that poppies have to be processed in order to become heroin, whereas weed can be picked and smoked as is.

And don't even think about getting rid of poppies! I'd die without my daily Lemon Poppyseed muffin!!!

Because the law is irrational. There are a myriad of other uses for the "Marijuana" plant as well. And it is not like you could just start growing poppies to make Heroin. If the government could prove you were growing poppies for the purpose of making heroin, you could be charged with a felony.

Poppies have to be processed through several stages of purity and concentration to produce heroin. It also takes a great many of them to produce a small quantity of heroin. In addition, most people lack the know-how and facilities (and land to grow the vast fields of poppies) needed to make their own heroin.

On the other hand, to grow your own reefer all you need is a pot (no pun intended), a plant, some water, a grow-light, and a closet. Most people can figure out how to dry the plant before they smoke it.

Hope this helps

The opium variety is likewise a taller plant than the only they strengthen for seeds. each and every so many times, I study in the papers the police officials studying the diverse red and white blossomed opium poppy growing to be in a backyard. The little old woman that replaced into growing to be them had them for 20 years and not in any respect knew. The narcotica is modern in all poppys yet in elementary words commercially centred adequate in the opium variety.

Poppies are flowers and someone would have a legitimate reason to grow them (they look nice, seed harvesting). Marijuana is a weed and no legitimate reason for being planted. Plus I don't think California would be too happy about having to change their state flower.

That is an excellent question. Perhaps because poppies have a pretty flower on them, but Mary Jane just looks like a weed. There's a Jim Crow standard there for drugs.
