What is the evidence for the Phoenicians circumnavigating Africa?

It's in Herodotus, Book 4, 42. Sent by King of Egypt c. 600 BC. Took three years over it. Puzzled that when they got far south, the sun was 'on their right hand' ie to the north of them - which it would have been, of course.
