I'm a computer programmer, not a techie, but my current job now requires me to know a little more about the innards of computers and I KNOW there's lots of you out there that could help shine some light on these questions.

1) What's the difference between DDR and DDR2 memory? Are they compatible? Is only one of them able to be paired up (ie 512 and 512 to make 1g ram)? How can you tell by looking at it which one it is?

2) What's the real differences between Pentium and Celleron(sp) processors?

3) How much faster, what's so good about Wireless N? I just started hearing about them a few days ago.

4) I know there's two types of ethernet cables for modem-router, and router-pc. Are there specific names for each? Last I heard you can't use the same wire for both.

5) What can you tell me about processors? Like, there are some duos and other such named processors. We sell laptops and desktops at work and I can't say which are "better" or faster by just the name of them.

If this is indeed job related I strongly urge you to build some self reliance by at least using a search engine to find your own answers to such questions.

This way you can choose to use information from more reliable sources.

In this forum there are many knowledgeable people kind enough to answer questions, however, you cannot know enough about them or trust them enough to risk your reputation at work on what they (we) advise.

I won't even mention the potential results & risks to your job performance by unwittingly relying on info provided here by the "less knowledgable" members.

regards,
Philip T

I don't know the answer to all them,
1.DDR2 as till recently could only be used with Intel processors! Just recently AMD came out with a processor (socket AM2) that supports DDR2 memory. You can tell the difference between them by the notches on the chip where it plugs into the motherboard. DDR is NOT compatible with DDR2!! You can pair 256 with 512 if you wish or 1gig with 2gig. In most cases it is a good idea to run Dual Channel memory which is a matched pair of memory, 512 with 512 as a an example, which yields more performance than just having 2 sticks of unmatched.

5.I don't know much about laptops but in most cases are slower than the same processors in desktop computers. Duo means Dual Core, of course dual core will perform usually just as fast as its single core brother but where the real performance increase come is when doing multiple processes because then you have 2 cores to distribute the work. Then now have Quad core processors coming out and they are just going to be blazing fast!

Hopefully you can understand all this and I didn't confuse you!

*1* DDR runs at 226-300 MHZ speed DDR2 runs at 400-800*MHZ
you can find the difference in the pin sector by looking at them

*2* Pentium processors are consisted for heavy duty work process with better material and resistants in it they have high performances
Celleron Processors are made for normal home and low budget pcs they are short term processors and not made for heavy duty task or long term usages
simply you can run a Pentium for over 3-4 months without shutting down the pc , you cant do this with celleron as it would be over heated within a week

*3* Wireless networks are faster and mobile then then other networks and they do not usually have problems as they work on gsm, gsr, gprs, bluetooth and wifi but they are not 100% safe or faster compared to fiber based network connectivities.

*4* for modem router you need a simple ethernet cable but now days for router pcs you need firewire connections which are intended to decode optical transmission by the adapter unit.

*5* as i would suggest you not to go so deep but about the duo's
simply dual core is 2 processor in one and core 2 duo is a single processor with virtual 2nd processor
simply core2 duo is a hardware based 2 core
dual core is software based 2 core

Karl, truly a 70s impression. they appear like a cool band. I basically picked up their album. besides, solid music. no longer their maximum ideal, yet an effective one. a million. certain 2. type of, besides the undeniable fact that they strike a cord in me dissimilar My Morning Jacket, who's a modern act. 3. properly, you obtain the album call already, yet i'd say Alt/persons Rock? i don't understand, classifying bands not in any respect works out for me.
