To sum it all up into one syllable...ewwww.
I also agree with the first answerer in the way that it is tolerated much more than it used to be. It shouldn't be and I wonder why this is - I thought we were supposed to be evolving as a race.
Many prostitutes use the excuse that they have nowhere else to work - I still don't see it. Even when I was going to college in a very large city (where prostitution was rampant in nearby areas), I found a job - even when the job market wasn't at it's best. I have NEVER been put in a situation where I felt that prostitution was my only means of making cash, but then again, it is not an option in my eyes...it is only so if you accept it as one.
Just because it's one of the oldest professions does not mean that it is respectable, acceptable or safe.
Would you or anyone that you know date a prostitute? I know the answer for me and most would be a resounding "NO".
Putting yourself at that kind of risk physically (STDs and such) is just ridiculous, yet some people still go to them. This blows my mind and is just so far beyond my realm of thinking that I can't even comprehend why someone would want to do that.
Geesh...

Make it legal, get the Guys/girls health checked and certified healthy. Get it off the streets as well. In the UK its still not looked upon in a good light, but it seems the majority of prostitutes are supporting a habit, even the Escorts (working from home/hotels)
If its regulated then hopefully the Murders we had over here in Ipswich (2006) wont be possible to happen again, even prostitutes deserve protection from that.

Prostitution is dangerous, and has always been. The reason is still the same. The clients seem to feel that its ok to exploit the prostitute, but its not ok for the prostitute to be a prostitute, so alot of them attack prostitutes, making the trade extremely risky.

I think it should be regulated like in other EU countrys,
techniqly prostitution is legal if you film the sex then buy the tape afterwards you are no longer paying for a service but a product, don't however get 2 prositiutes since you will now be charged with owning a brothel which is ilegal

I believe that working girls provide a valuable service. Is it better from someone to have an affair when they are not having a fullfilling relationship with the woman they still love? What if she is ill, or going through the menopause? Surely an occasional visit to a professional who is not wanting a 'relationship' is far safer. Not all prostitutes are drug addicts, most are concerned about their safety and health and are just looking to make some money.

I am not for illegal prostitution. It is dangerous and often used by desperate people to get money for drugs.
I think that legal prostitution with licences, health checks, and standards would be better. The taxes raised could be used to pay for schools and hospitals.

I think prostitutes can easily find other jobs other than selling themselves for sex. I don't like prostitutes at all.

i think even though the prostitutes consent to it (most of the time) i think they are still victims of society. many start very young, often get pushed into it by someone or out of desperation for money--for drugs or food. they don't have job skills, they only have their body to allow others to use it as they wish for a fee. waitress, stripper, or prostitute are the main choices for "unskilled" women to make a living on her own. the latter two are the easier ones, the most demeaning, and tend to pay better. it's really sad.

Prostitution comes from desperation. Young girls forced into in, sold into it or do it to fund a drug habit.
Those of you who think its OK now imagine its your mum/sister/daughter/son etc having sex with someone for money taking risks with their life/health. How would you feel if your lover was seeing one?
There needs to be more help for drug adicts to enable them to get away from this.
It's gone on 4 thousands of years and it will always be around unfortunately.

I think it should be regulated. Like some places in Europe. Prostitution has existed since the dawn of man and will likely exists for thousands of years more. ( until we evolve out of having orgasms. )
