He founded the American Federation of Labor. He also started a point of view in the U.S. labor movement that unions could best represent workers when they organized them by crafts. For example, electricians, barbers, carpenters. That way, plumbers unions could concentrate on concerns of plumbers. Later, other U.S. labor pioneers insisted that in steelmaking, auto making, and mining, representation by crafts would let big steel, auto, and mining companies divide workers against one another. So those industries had to be organized by industry. Example: United Auto Workers, United Mine Workers. The combination of all those was the Congress of Industrial Organizations, CIO. It wasn't really easy to bring them together as the AFL-CIO.

I believe you meant to write, "What did Samuel Gompers do" instead...
Gompers founded the AFL (American Federation of Labor, not the American Football League) back in the 1880s. That's all I remember, as I haven't taken an American History course since the late 1970s.

Samuel Gompers, a british born cigar maker, organized a new union in Columbus, Ohio. The American Federation of Labor, or AFL was open to skilled workers only...hope i helped!
