Hey I have a red-bellied Pacu that is about 3 years old now and 2 days ago I bought a new filter system for the tank and a few hours after changing it, One of the other Pacu's in the tank died. Now My 3 year old Pacu is upside down on the bottom of the tank, not moving, only his tail slightly "wags" and he is still breathing...When I tap him he is like a rock and flips right back over.He hasn't eaten for 2 days because he is like this, is there anything I could do for him or is he going to die too? Thank you.

if you replaced the filter media also (the sponge etc) you've thrown away all the good bacteria and your tank has gone into a cycle. your ammonia will have peaked and your pacus have died and are dying from ammonia burns. how large is your tank? do daily water changes of about 30%, do one now! and you'll need to keep doing this until the tank has cycled again. get liquid ammonia, nitrate and nitrite test kits if you haven't got them already. it may be too late for your pacu, i'm not sure how tough they are to messy water conditions.

I don't think the Pacu will make it. Something must be wrong with the new filter because removing the entire bacteria colony would not kill fish within 3 hours. Go back to the store where you got it and seek help, but if it's one of the "big box" stores you and your fish are probably not going to get much help. The only thing that might help would be adding a charcoal component to the system, if there are toxins it might remove them. --------I wish you good luck.-------PeeTee --- Oh yeah, rinse the charcoal before adding it.

Doesn't sound too good. I'd definitely call the fish store and ask them for advice. Did you rinse the filter media before you put the filter together?
