Looks more like an octopus, but that's just from the ancient paintings. The kraken has been described as everything from a giant squid or octopus to more like a creature mistaken for a small island or large whale (leviathan). It seems that most ancient mariners could not conceive of what the kraken really was, other than there was something really bad in the depths of the sea. The term kraken became the name for this creature and served as an adequate warning to all sea goers.
For more information the Yahoo! directory for kraken is: http://dir.yahoo.com/Science/Alternative_Science/Paranormal_Phenomena/Cryptozoology/Sea_Serpents_and_Lake_Monsters/Kraken/
wikipedia is also a good source for an answer to this question - looks like a giant octopus in the paintings of the legendery sea creature, although the creation of this legend is said to have been inspired by the sightings by European sailors of the giant squid, centuries ago. I always thought that it was the creature that must be released after one eats a large bowl of chili.

A kraken is more like a a giant squid, and I REALLY mean giant. Krakens were what could supposedly crush ships with just a few of their tentacles. They were the monsters of the deep.

krakens are legendary sea monsters of gargantuan size, said to have dwelled off the coasts of Norway and Iceland. The sheer size and fearsome appearance attributed to the beasts have made them common ocean-dwelling monsters in various fictional works.it is of a Scandinavian descent. The legend has been said to have originated from sightings of real giant squid that are estimated to grow to 43 feet in length.

The Kraken is neither. It is a sort of horse-like sea-monster created by Poseidon (Latin name: Neptune) to eat the princess of an Ionian city-state he did not like. Glad to help!
