The identity of Douglass' father is obscure; Douglass originally stated that his father was a white man, perhaps his master, Captain Aaron Anthony, but later said he knew nothing of his father's identity.

The son of a slave woman and an unknown white man, "Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey" was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1818, and was given the name Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey (Baly), after his mother Harriet Bailey.
