Fact from fiction, truth from diction. Short conjures up thoughts of weakness. Less stature. Less dignity etc. that is why you are always told to "stand tall" when you do not want to appear beaten or you do not want to appear broke if defeated. Because to bend forward(looking shorter)is to appear less strong, and more weak. Tall is dignity, healthy etc. All culturally passed on subconsciously through the ages. No one wants to be considered a midget, not even midgets. The same reason why fat people say they are "big", "plus sized" etc. Because no ne wants to be called fat even when they know they are fat.

Petite has nothing to do with weight! Where did you get that idea from??
Petite is any woman shorter than 5'4", and the sizes range from 0-14. So a woman could wear size 10 or 12 but be 5'2"...She is still considered Petite, or a large petite. A woman that is 5'2" and wears size 2 is a slim petite.

Short sounds a lot less politically correct and makes people think that a woman is a midget (which itself is a very derogatory word) so instead they say that they are petite. It also has to do with the fact that short women have to shop for petite clothes which have shorter sleeves etc. even if they are build larger.

first petite is a standard of clothing so that short peoplecan find clothing that fits so that they do not have to later alter and being 4' 11 and 100 pds. its more unlikely i find something to fit me. thats what you call petite and some people actually want to be this size! short is never been a problem thats why they invented high heels if you want height.you can be round and still not find the length of pants you need.

Because the clothes we have to buy are called petite. The arms and legs are shorter.
Lucky for me, I am not round or troll like so I think your question is funny.

Because petite is the french word for small or short. And it certainly sounds better.

Well I suppose its because 'petite' sounds chic, whereas 'short' sounds less attractive. Tall women, like myself, generally don't care. Except when it comes to finding trousers that are long enough in the leg!!!

The same as a woman not shopping at a clothing store due to the labels reflecting the correct size.
Example: store #1 states "size 8" on a pair of jeans, while store #2 states "size 6" on the exact pair of jeans- guess which one they will buy?

I've always thought of petite as meaning small in build.
Am I wrong?

Normally "petite" isn't referring just to their height.
Shorter women (not necessarily small) generally shop in the "petites" section of department stores, as it is made for smaller women.
Why they call it that, i do not know.
