I'd like to find a position in a smaller or more rural school district for the 2007-2008 school year. My endorsements are K-6 music and 7-12 history. (Yes, I know that it's a weird combination!) I've looked at the major newspapers in the state, but it seems like a listing I see one week is not there the next. Maybe I'm panicking too early, but I really want to land my first teaching job next year!

See if Nebraska has a department of education or board of education website... that's how it is in Indiana, there's a central website for the dept. of ed. and they list openings there. School districts aren't required to list, but most of them do. Also, you should call a university (I don't know what universities exist in Nebraska) but most of them should have some kind of placement office that receives listings of openings.
It's not too early, but don't panic! Good luck!
Why do you want to teach in Nebraska? Believe me, there are lots of rural districts here in Indiana that could use you!!

I wouldn't depend on listings in the paper. I'd send an application packet (resume, cover letter, application, all paperwork) to every rural district in the area thatyou'd like to work at. And send a copy of your paperwork to every principal in the schools you'd like to work at too.

Oftentimes, vacancies aren't listed in the paper. Most schools' human resources offices already have a pile of applications, so they don't advertise unless they need to. Send every school you'd like to work at a copy of your resume. If they say they're not hiring, ask them to keep it on file. They will. Trust me. I got two jobs that way. :)

Even if they're not hiring, send them information anyway. Sometimes positions open (last minute retirement, increased enrollment, etc.) and they need someone in a hurry.

Are you willing to be a sub for a year or so if you need to? If so, be sure you get on the sub lists of your favorite districts. Many will hire subs because they know them and they're used to working with them. Besides, you just never know when someone might go away on maternity leave and make you the full-time teacher for awhile. :)

Lastly, don't panic yet. The job hunt takes time. You're doing the right thing by looking early, but the jobs you want can come up at any time between now and the start of school next year.

I have a web site with lots of info about getting a teaching job. Tkae a look: http://www.iwantateachingjob.com

Good luck.

I LOVED the small schools there! When I lived there one thing I noticed is you best forget the papers. They just don't post alot of jobs. Have you tried job services or simply sending resumes to the schools in the small towns? Try in the Hartington area. Cedar county. Some teachers were getting close to retirement a couple of years ago.

The best way is to contact the admin. office in each district and ask if they have or expect openings. It's a bit of work, but you'll know where the jobs are.

just wait around for awhile as a sub, wait for one of the bad teachers to be fired, the school system sucks all over Nebraska, just be the best.
