I have a PowerMac G3 266/96MB that keeps freezing when MAC OS 9.2 starts up. It finishes loading the system software and I can see the desktop with my hard drive and the trash can, but I can't open anything. Double clicking on the hard drive or trash can does not open anything and I can't get any of the menu items to open up. What is wrong and how do I fix it?

Please help.

It's looking for the network. Did you try leaving it for 5 minutes to see if it would snap out of it?
In not, when you get to where it freezes, hit command-option-escape and see what program quits.

I would have to agree with the first answer. 9 out of 10 times, this is a network issue. Extension conflicts usually cause the computer to get stuck during the startup process. Try this:

start the computer with the extensions off. Start or restart the computer and hold the "Shift" key held down, through the startup process. (You will see an "Extensions Off" during the startup process) If OS 9.2 advances to the desktop, and allows you to open the hard drive, try the following:
Open up your hard drive, and then open your "System Folder" window. In there, you should find a folder named "Servers" or "Recent Servers". If you see anything in the server folder, drag it into the trash.
If that doesn't work, you have a corrupt system folder, extensions conflict, or a bad hard drive. So if step one doesn't work, you have to some how backup, and reinstall your system on your drive, because bad extensions/ bad system folders, are like colds. They don't go away very easily.

I doubt that it is looking for the network and that is causing your system to not respond. You should consider the more likely explanation that you have an extensions conflict. This was the main trouble with the OS 9 and all previous operating systems. They would hang or other wise freak out if two estensions were in conflict or if an incompatible extension were installed. Follow the long and tedious steps outlined in the link below.

If that is not the issue, run Disk First Aid to test the hard drive volume. You will find it in the "Applications OS 9 / Utilities" folder. Repair the drive more than once until you get "Appears to be OK" twice in a row.

there is not any way you may get carry of the deploy discs on line. your ultimate selection is to enhance to Leopard and purchase that or touch an apple save and get them to deliver you exchange installation cd (that's what i had to do whilst mine have been given broken.) you do no longer unavoidably could fix the laptop, you may constantly basically flow via each thing and delete each and all of the documents which you have extra. (exchange the wallpaper to default besides.)
