Well i told her i really wanted to play bass cuz i heard that it was easier than electric. I`m going to be in a band(well we are thinking about it) and so how about how long will it take me to learn that, then switch over to bass and start playing that? I am 12 yrs old by the way.

I think what she was meaning is that once you learn one string instrument...you can basically play them all.
An acoustic would be great to learn finger positions and how to correctly use the pick and/or strum.
So it really doesn't matter.
But think of it this way...if you learn the guitar first...then you'll have 2 instruments under your belt.

Learning acoustic guitar is always good. If you know guitar, you can play bass too. Also, you shouldn't just play bass because it's "easier". It can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. Just because there's four strings doesn't mean it's any less intricate or challenging.

You don't need to learn acoustic first, but it would definitely be useful and make bass easier.

Knowing how to play both acoustic and electric bass would probably be better for you. The big giant acoustic bass sounds awesome and if you're going to be in a band and could play both, it would be great.

If you look at some famous bass players, like Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, he doesn't just play electric, he also plays stand-up bass. (As seen in music video for Johnny Cash song).

You don't necessarily NEED to know how to play acoustic first, but it might help in the long run.

nah, don't learn acoustic, you don't need it. But don't say your playing it because it's easier, I'm in a band and recently picked up the bass too. (i'm 14) Here is what i'm saying, just explain to your Mom why you want to play bass, say something like, I like the sound better, i hate electric guitar, acoustic stinks. You know, stuff like that.

Good luck!!!

I heard that bass is much easiear. But, your twelve, and that might be a little big for you. Try acoustic and if you dont like it you can play bass. This way you will still be able to read tabs and learning to play wont be as big a deal.

that's how i feel too...i wanna play bass but of course my mom said the same thing too about acoustic. i guess both our moms are right, but i say give the acoustic a try first, then if u know someone with a bass guitar (or rent one at ur local music store) and try that out and compare the two.

Oh, yeah, it makes perfect sense. It's actually easier to switch from 6-string guitar to bass. I took lessons on guitar and didn't even have to do any lessons for bass at all; just looked up everything online and taught myself. The acoustic guitar teaches you the basics of the instrument and its variants. Believe it or not, your mum's actually right about this one.
