Could be as simple as a red eared slider. Where do you live as that would help a lot. Do you live near a pond or body of water as well? Try the link below if you don't get the right answer here.

1. Please do not try to keep it as a pet. Wild-caught turtles do not do well in captivity. Keeping it for a couple days is not a big problem, but please release it where you found it ASAP.

2. Knowing where in the world you are would help us fine-tune the ID. Also, knowing the color and pattern on the belly (plastron).

3. Try this gallery for help: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/world_of_turtles/

4. If the belly is red or red-orange, it is probably a kind of Painted turtle. If the back has knobs along the middle ridge, it is probably a kind of Map turtle. Otherwise- most of the cooters and sliders look pretty much like what you described. (Yes, 'cooter' is a real kind of turtle!)

I'm not sure what kind of turtle you have found, but if it has webbed feet, it is a water turtle. Return him to the water source, he's lost his way.

it sounds like a red earded slide, cooter, or painted trutle, but that really isn't enough imfo to identify it
