Supply registers are supposed to have dampers built into them, pick one up and check. If not you may have dampers in the round pipe where they connect to the main trunk of the ductwork. You'll see a little handle on the side of the round pipe. They are open when the handle is paralell with the pipe, closed when perpendicular. those are nice because you can regulate the airflow throughout the whole house.

Home Depot and Lowe's have vent covers that are magnetic.
Putting a rug over it may cause the rug to ignite if it gets too hot.
You don't want a fire in the house.
Take the temp on the floor at random times during a three-day period and present the landlord with your data. If things are too hot something needs to be fixed, but facts are more convincing than emotion or complaints.

Have you thought about a plastic register? The wood register was a good idea, but possibly a little spendy. RV parts stores usually have registers made of plastic, not hot to the touch, and better for the 2 year olds tootsies.

Wow! i would be getting my dogs quickly and the block off part of the homestead she'll be staying in does have a vent. amazing now we are dogs proofing the area so i will make certain that blockading the vents or removing her collar is on the checklist! thank you lots. All those little ifs and buts look impossible till they ensue!

How about tipping a metal wastepaper basket upside down. Maybe one that has mesh so the air can still go though.

Putting rugs over the heating ducts might cause a fire hazard. Don't do it.

DOES IT OVERHEAT THE APARTMENT? IF YOU CUT BACK ON THE FLOW OF THE HEATED AIR WILL THE APARTMENT BE WARM ENOUGH. IF THE ANSWER IS YES, YOU NEED TO HAVE DIFFUSERS/REGISTERS WITH DAMPERS TO ADJUST AIR FLOW ALTHOUGH THE THERMOSTAT SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THAT. TO MAKE THE REGISTERS 'NOT SO HOT' TO THE TOUCH WOULD MEAN SOMETHING TO SET ON TOP OF IT THAT ALLOWS AIR FLOW BUT DOESN'T SCORCH YOU IF YOU STEP ON IT. FOR THE MOMENT, I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING THAT WOULD DO IT BETTER FOR YOU THAN THAT WASTEBASKET SUGGESTION.

if you have some big heavy books, they will work fine in the short term until you can get some metallic covers. you just need to block the air.

If they are screwed on then they could be replaced with wood registers that would be slightly cooler to the touch.
