Why does K-tel now use newly recorded songs, sung by the original artists?

Every time I see a CD from K-tel, they never have the original recordings. I think they started doing this back in the 80's or 90's, but I don't know why. Please help me out!

They even did it in the 70's. They modify the tracks to make them fit on 21 or 24 tracks disc. Sometimes the versions were the same but much shorter...

It's cheaper.
