Traditionally men bought gifts for naughty women, today the reverse roles are accepted in our society. Also, on average men have higher disposable incomes, thus it makes sense for the promoters to target the richer source.
Also, many women prefer to make the day festive by preparing a special dinner, for example, and traditionally the guest brings the gift.
Most men and women like to bestow gifts, if they know their efforts will be appreciated and understood correctly, so try to give gladly and be happy you have someone to love and to give gifts to.

Marketing! Stop listening to the radio and TV, get your sweaty something from the heart, you'll probably get it back in two folds... this goes to woman too.

There aren't too many things to market for men, how many man would want a heart necklace for v-day or a lacy lingerie? So marketers concentrate on what they can sell and make a good profit like the 1000% mark-up on jewels. Concentrating on Marketing for Men to purchase for the woman (since men are gullible) is the best marketing possible, especially if they can saturate the market and make woman hear that every day.

I've actually gotten more for my husband every year we've been together than he's gotten me.

But then again, I've never been normal.
