Yes you can, as long as you're both playing an original Xbox game (i.e. Halo 2). Most original Xbox games are back compatible with the 360. Check here for a list:

As for sports games though, I'm afraid your answer is NO. A lot of new ones come out on both consoles (like Tiger Woods and Madden), but to play together, you both must have the original Xbox version. The 360 version is NOT compatible online against the Xbox version. However, most of the original Xbox versions of EA sports games do NOT play on the 360 (check the list).

But yes you can game against them on backwards compatible orignal Xbox games. Halo 2 works well. Even if all your friends don't have a 360 yet, you can still play against them from your 360 against them on an orginal Xbox.

You can also send game invites to and from each console, but the original Xbox doesn't support chatting and messaging like the 360.

You should be able to considering I play halo 2 on my xbox with other people that use and xbox 360. Not sure if it works for all games though.

If your xbox is flashed, or modded or w/e you want to call it, jsut buy going online, and even using a real game, Microsoft can detect this, as your driver will be different to the one they have registered to your serial number at their HQ, and they will perm-ban you xbox, meaning although your GT can go online at a friends, your xbox will not allow anyone online, not even a friend who isn't banned.
