Chinese New Year, known as the Spring Festival to the Chinese, starts on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese Calendar and last for 15 days. Thus, it moves from year to year.
This year it is 18th February 2007.
(I feel rough having celebrated just one night of New Year. I wonder how the Chinese feel! Perhaps they just pace themselves).

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later
The Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year

Feb. 18, 2007 will be the first day of a year of the pig.
Feb. 07, 2008 will be the first day of a year of the rat.

just notice that the first day of lunar new year in Vietnam (which is the chinese new year in other countries) is on 17 Feb not 18 Feb. For the last 2 years, the first day happened to be on the same date. Yet, this year it is different. So I think if you want to celebrate with people from a particular country, please check their calendar.
