What do you mean why is it a tragic play? It clearly is...

1. Othello's lieutenant, Iago, sets up a ploy to trick Othello into thinking that his wife, Desdemona, is having an affair with another man. Othello falls for it and kills her, then finds out the truth and kills himself, falling on top of her body as he dies.

2. Othello is a Moor, or black man, and this causes some problems like Desdemona's father objecting to their marriage, believing that Othello used withcraft to enchant her.

3. Clearly the problem here is that he doesn't have enough faith in her.

It is not a tragic play but it tells the story of a tragic figure. It is tragic because the playwright satisfies all what Aristotle says about tragic heroes in literature. Othello is a tragic character because, the more he thinks he is making the right decisions, the more the error of of his judgment.
1. Summarize yourself
2. Remember Othello was once sold and lived among the Anthropophagi, people whose shoulders grow above their heads!!? That's a good detail as you summarize
3. He loved her dearly but after Iago poisoned his soul, he detested her with all his passion. Of course he strangled her to death and soon realized his error.

Good luck.
