there are 2 version of how ST. Valentine became a saint.
One was that back in the year 269 AD on Feb. 14 he was a priest and did not follow the rules set forth by the Emperor Clausius who forbade marriage to insure his soldiers had no family ties. Valentine on the sly preformed marriages any ways and was put to death.
The other that he was imprisoned for his faith Cured the jailers daughter of blindness and sent her a farewell message of love.
signed as Valentine. He was put to death anyways. Life sometimes is not fair!

Who WAS Valentine? Was he a doctor? No. Was he a lawyer? No. Was he a priest? Yes, according to the catholic church he was a priest. He was imprisoned by the Romans for performing illegal marriages. After he was killed, he became a saint.
