The captain of a cricket team is a player who, during the course of a match, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of a regular player. As in other sports, the captain is usually an experienced cricketer with good communication skills, who is likely to be one of the most regular members of the team; indeed the captain often has a say in team selection. Before the game the captains toss for innings. During the match each captain decides the team's batting order, who will bowl each over, and where each fielder will stand. While the captain has the final say, decisions are often collaborative. A captain's knowledge of the complexities of cricket strategy and tactics, and shrewdness in the field, may contribute significantly to the team's success.

At international level:

Possibly help with selection
Choose the batting order and tinker with it if the match situation requires it
Set fields for his bowlers
Sort out who will bowl from which end and when changes need to be made
Ideally, be an inspiring figure for the rest of the team, either through personal achievement (Tony Grieg) or inspiring confidence (Mike Brearley)
- the last three are most important

at county/state level:
+ organise net practices

at amateur level:
+ pick the team
+ call the other 10 players to let them know they're playing
+ call reserves on Friday night when the inevitable dropouts happen
+ organise the teas
+ organise transport or convoy to away games
+ make sure pitch is prepared (often having to do it himself)
+ basically, being in charge of practically everything that happens between an hour before the game till an hour after it!

I have known one captain who took 'all ten' and then did all the washing up at tea, while other captains of my acquaintance have provided teas, scorers, sightscreens, transport etc etc etc so the other 10 players could just turn up and play. At parks level the business of setting the field and changing the bowling is about 10% of the captain's total workload - no wonder so many quit after one year!

Depends what level you mean.
For example, a club cricket captain would need to organise practice session, get involved with selection of a team, organise team to meet for match. Get the team motivated for the game ahead - by using a team talk or talk one-on-one. Toss a coin and use a game plan to try to beat the other team.
They have to decide on batting line-up and bowling options and place and change the fielders for each different situation.
They have to make a contribution as a player, they talk with the umpires and ensure the team play in a correct spirit but play to win.
At our club, they have to attend meetings - orgainse tours and friendlies; ensure clothing is ordered and anything else to help at the club.

But an international captain.....they just help with selection, play, motivate and change the bowlers & fielders around a bit!

Ours losses the toss on a consistant level, leads the sunbathing and drinking, disappears when important decisions are required, writes a few notes down on who plays in what order on a scrap piece of paper, gets to the tea's first and genrally chills out.

a cricket captain has the most important job.He has to have a good temperament, cool head, controlling ability, skill and aggression. He also should be able to organise the team in one unit and make them fire.He has to lead from the front. He has to use his brain to apply strategy even in times of difficulty. If he has these qualities he will be a good captain.I hope this question satisfies your queries.

its his job to motivate players, to set the field and decide which bowler to use at what end and when. he's also the first line of communication between the umpires and the team on the pitch

he decides where the fielders go, he encourages his bowlers and fielders, he decides who is gonna bowl and sometimes he decides the batting line up with some help of the coach. he also gets to lift the trophy first!
