You have to go to the Suharto museum. It's filled with gifts the former president recieved from other heads of state, some of whom were not stingy in the least. Also there is a theme park (Taman Mini Indonesia Indah) about the cultures of Indonesia that's fun. Also, Taman Impian Jaya Ancol which has some water parks and an awesome SeaWorld. If you can go to the old Dutch section of Jakarta (Batavia). Ragunan Zoo is kind of depressing, but they have an Orangutan conservation program and you can feed baby Orangutans.
If you want to take a couple of days outside the city I recommend Yogyakarta and a trip up Mt Merapi, out to the largest Buddhist temple in the world (borobudur) and Prambanan (Hindu temples).
A cruise around the Thousand Islands is also a good way to relax.

Hi, places that you must visit:
1. Kemang
Expatriates area with upscale bars and cafes
2. Museum...try Fatahilah museum because there you can have mesuem tour in walking distant.
3. National Monuments (so called: Monas)
4. TMII (Indonesia in miniature)
Its a Indonesia in summary...must visit!
5. Sea world (Ancol)
It is located in a fantasy land complex. They also have water park, fantasy land.

Thats all within Jakarta. Check this website, will help you alot! http://www.jakartaexpat.com

Now, whenever you have time, you can visit nearby city.
1. Bogor
Its about 1-2 hours drive (it is near to TMII I mentioned above). You can visit the garden with its famous flower called Rafflesia Arnoldi (stinky flower). but you must check when it is possible to watch the blossom of it
2. Bandung
2-3 hours drive. its less hot than jakarta (temperature wise). Enjoy unique cafe up on the mountain. The Peak, The Valley the view is superb. It is also famous for its factory outlet, you can enjoy buying branded stuff in cheap price.
3. Thousand Island
Consist of few island. Depart from Ancol about 2 hours boat. Can try island hopping altho it would be similar anyway..

Since you didnt mention how long you will be in Jakarta...I wouldnt recommend you anything more than above.

If you would like to travel to Bali from Jakarta or other island such as Menado, or Yogyakarta, try to have local tour operator to arrange everything.

Since it is your first time, I recommend you to travel with a local.

Oh yes, in case you have to take taxi, only take BLUE BIRD brand or SILVER BIRD...other than that you better wait or ask your hotel to call a taxi for you.

phew...lots of things I could have told you hahahah....but thats all for now.

Email the website I mentioned above to ask for more info. I know that they willing to give info about Jakarta in detail.

Good luck and enjoy!!!

Only malls, malls and malls! Office buildings also, alongside poor people wandering in the streets searching for food and money.
